In early 2019, brothers Juan Borrego and Marco Borrego launched this nonprofit after witnessing friends harmed by unregulated e-cigarettes and JUULs, determined to educate peers and stem the teen vaping epidemic. Working with Dr. Bonnie Halpern-Felsher of Stanford University’s Tobacco Prevention Toolkit, they developed a comprehensive, research-driven curriculum covering addiction science, teen brain development, harmful chemicals in e-juice, and industry marketing tactics.
They built a student-driven ambassador program—training teens to lead awareness campaigns in their schools and meet with administrators to integrate our curriculum into local systems. From high-school hallways to Capitol Hill meetings, our founders and ambassadors have modeled how youth voice and testimony can spur policy change.
To date, Attention to Prevention has launched official clubs at Buford High School and the University of North Georgia, and partnered with Forsyth County Drug Awareness youth groups to extend its reach across the state of Georgia. Our ambassadors have testified before the Georgia State Capitol and been featured in outlets such as the Gwinnett Daily Post and Atlanta Journal-Constitution—demonstrating the power of youth testimony to influence policy. Operating with no paid staff, 100 percent of donations fund school programs, awareness campaigns, research, and legislative advocacy.
Recognizing that meaningful change requires more than e-cigarette awareness, we’ve expanded into an action civics model—guiding students to identify community issues, dive into legislative texts, and advocate directly to policymakers.
From our origins in e-cigarette prevention to a fully realized action civics program, we empower students to traverse the full arc of public policy—fostering the next generation of informed change-makers.
